Dateline: 3 September 1965, roadside, Route 150 near the power lines, Exeter, New Hampshire
The Exeter News-Letter reported that a motorist and a police officer observed a cluster of bright lights hovering above a field shortly after 2:00 a.m. The lights were described as moving in formation before rising out of sight. The paper stated that the officer returned to the station and filed a routine incident report. No damage to crops or property was noted, and the power company confirmed no outages in the area that night.
The account repeated in Exeter kitchens today does not mention a motorist or a police report. People say the field off Route 150 has remained lit every night since, and that the lights sit low enough to cast shadows on the grass even when the power lines are dark. Drivers are said to pull over and leave their engines running until the lights move on. No one in the retelling recalls a formation or a station log.
