Episode 44: The Sound That Wouldn’t Leave

Eshan removed the outer cover from the storage alcove while Echo listened to the clicking.
A young conduit offered a tool. A second suggested tightening the lower fitting.
“One change at a time,” Kahlia said.
They tightened it. The sound paused for ten seconds, then returned.
Echo entered the result in the repair log. “A brief improvement. An impressively brief improvement.”
The warmer teacher chuckled. The quieter historian leaned closer, looking past the panel toward the crowded shelves.
“What is stored behind it?” he asked.
Meal supplies, spare fittings, and several items no one remembered putting there. Clearing access took longer than removing the cover.
One of the past-life brothers found a missing tray and held it up to the other.
“You said I left it in hydroponics.”
“I was confidently mistaken.”
By afternoon they could reach the mechanism properly. Eshan checked the cleared space and handed Kahlia the recovered tray.
The clicking remained, but they had stopped repairing around a pile of things nobody had wanted to move.
“Tomorrow,” she said, “we begin with a clear workspace.”
Echo added one last line to the log: Access improved. Machine remains ungrateful.
To be continued…
