Echoes from the Deep #043

Episode 43: A Small Disruption

The morning began like many others. Soft light moved through the coral arches. Systems ran cleanly. People went about their tasks with the easy pace of a community no longer living in crisis.

Then the sound started.

It was not loud at first — a faint, irregular clicking that came from one of the secondary storage alcoves near the meal preparation area. Most people ignored it. A few glanced over and kept walking. By mid-morning the clicking had grown just persistent enough to be noticed.

Kahlia paused near the alcove, glowing cane in hand, and listened. Captain Eshan joined her a moment later. Echo’s form appeared beside them, teal patterns shifting with mild curiosity.

“It’s not a system failure,” Echo said. “It’s mechanical. Something small is catching and releasing.”

The warmer of the two long-lived teachers drifted closer, smiling as if the problem amused him. “I’ve heard worse sounds in older places,” he said lightly. “Though I admit this one has a certain determination.”

The quieter historian simply observed, offering no comment yet.

While the clicking continued, everyday life moved around it. Near the hydroponics bay, a younger conduit worked beside an older woman, their conversation practical and unhurried. At the shared tables, two past-life brothers sorted supplies in comfortable silence. The long-lived teachers remained present in their different ways — one steady and watchful, the other offering easy remarks that drew the occasional smile.

By afternoon the clicking had become a shared nuisance. Several people tried simple fixes. One adjusted a panel. Another tightened a loose fitting. The sound paused… then returned with what almost felt like stubbornness. A few soft laughs moved through the group. The problem was minor, but it was beginning to claim more attention than it deserved.

Veyra passed through and paused only briefly. “Even small disruptions have a way of gathering people,” she said. “Sometimes that is not entirely a bad thing.”

Kahlia asked Eshan to check the panel in the morning. For now, the meal supplies could still be reached, and no safety system was affected.

To be continued…
