Episode 59: One Current Settles
The younger woman began the morning by checking the nutrient flow.
She finished one row, corrected a loose connection, and asked the older worker to check the next tray with her. Only afterward did she notice that she had not begun the day at the shoreline.
The discovery made her stop.
“What is it?” the older woman asked.
“I can carry it without chasing it.”
She glanced toward the dry place where they had stored the drawing. The promise still mattered. So did the person whose face she could not reach. But she no longer felt required to spend every quiet moment searching for them.
The older woman met her eyes. “Then what would you like to do this morning?”
The question was ordinary enough to bring a smile.
“Finish this row.”
At the central station, Echo logged another clean six-zone sequence. Eshan reviewed it once and left the display running. The Archive’s pulse remained unexplained.
Kahlia passed on her way to hydroponics. She saw the two women working side by side and asked whether they needed another pair of hands.
The younger woman made room.
Across the chamber, the quieter historian answered a question from a sensor crew. The warmer teacher helped one of the brothers return a repaired tool. Their long memories belonged among these ordinary exchanges as much as any recorded account.
By midday, the growth trays were reset. Kahlia sat to rest her back while the younger woman carried the finished record to Echo herself.
There would be more to remember, perhaps. There would also be work she could choose, people she could sit beside, and meals that were allowed to be only meals.
Behind her, the Archive’s pulse began another circuit.
She kept walking.
