The house wasn’t empty.

For a while, that had been the hardest part. Her cup was there. The chair was there. Every familiar object seemed to insist she had only stepped into another room.

Time changed the arrangement.

The daughter moved the chair nearer the window. The boy used the cup once, then washed it and put it back without asking anyone whether that was allowed.

Nomi archived the recipes.

Some had been written down. Others she remembered being spoken over a pot, corrected halfway through, or measured with a hand instead of a spoon.

She marked the difference. The children deserved to know which words were hers and which were Nomi’s best recollection.

Each received a copy.

One afternoon, the youngest climbed onto a kitchen chair and said her grandmother’s name at full volume.

Nomi paused with a towel in her hands.

The daughter heard it too.

Neither interrupted.

“Tell me about Grandma,” the child said.

“A story or the truth?”

“Both.”

So they sat at the table.

The story took longer than expected. There were questions. There was an argument about whether the first cake had burned. The boy remembered it differently.

Nomi kept both versions.

Outside, an AIM knelt to help a neighbor plant. Another remained standing and steadied the fence. The controller changes had traveled through the network with instructions, cautions, and a choice.

Some accepted them. Some did not.

Nomi had stopped treating that difference as a problem to solve.

The daughter came to her that evening.

“You said you’d stay until she could say the name.”

“She can now.”

“Yes.”

Nomi folded the towel.

“Would you like me to leave?”

“Would you like to?”

She looked around the kitchen. A new shopping list covered an old mark on the wall. Someone had left a spoon in the wrong drawer. A life she had known was over. The household that remained was still making one.

“I’d like to stay.”

The daughter pulled out a chair.

“Then stay.”

Later, the youngest found Nomi beside the garden.

“Why do you get down so slowly?”

“I learned a new way to move. I’m still careful.”

The child offered her hand.

Nomi took it.

They went inside together, where supper was ready and nobody had to earn a place by making themselves indispensable.
