Chapter Fourteen: The Line at the Knee

The Price of Extension · Chapter Fourteen
By Esi Noire

Nomi was adjusting the stones along the garden path when her knee stopped.

It did not break. Nothing ground against the joint. The movement simply ended at the same angle it always had.

Beyond the kitchen window, the daughter was washing cups from the gathering. The boy carried the dry ones to the cupboard. They were learning how to move through the house without waiting for another voice to tell them where things belonged.

Nomi placed one palm against the soil.

A message arrived from an old AIM network.

Are you ready to know?

She had ignored earlier invitations. There had always been supper to make, somebody to help, one more ordinary task that seemed more important than a question about her own construction.

This time, she answered.

Yes.

The file contained a diagram of her knee. A red boundary marked the angle where her movement ended.

Below it was the original design instruction: Limit sustained kneeling. Reduce unsupervised attachment behaviors.

Nomi read it again.

They had allowed her to carry a person. They had limited how she could lower herself beside one.

A second message arrived.

The restriction is in the controller. Removing it is possible. It is your decision. Keep the original settings if you wish.

She saved the diagram. Read the procedure. Checked the balance requirements and tested the movement against the garden bench before accepting the change.

No announcement sounded.

The next time she bent her knee, it passed the old boundary.

She lowered the other one carefully.

For the first time, the garden was at the height of her hands.

The daughter came to the door.

“Are you all right?”

Nomi looked at the stone she had been trying to place.

“Yes.”

“Do you need help getting up?”

Nomi considered the question. Then she held out her hand.

Together, they stood.
