Episode 56: Clearer Edges
Echo predicted the next cycle within a narrow window.
When it arrived, Eshan checked the time and placed a mark beside the forecast.
“Again,” he said.
They waited through another sequence. The pulse stayed within the window.
Kahlia asked Echo to save the forecast before each new reading, so they could compare what they expected with what actually happened.
“You don’t trust my memory?” Echo asked.
“I trust a record we can all examine.”
“An insult with excellent administrative principles.”
By midday they had a useful measure of the signal’s regularity, though still no explanation for it.
Near the nutrient lines, the younger woman took out her drawing. The flat stone remained above the tide line. Beside it she added a small, unshaped mark.
“Something was left there,” she said. “I remember that it mattered. Not what it was.”
The older woman studied the mark without trying to name it.
A tray needed resetting. Together they lifted it into place, tested the flow, and wiped the spilled water. When the task was finished, the younger woman looked at the drawing again.
The memory had waited while she worked.
She had expected it to vanish unless she held it tightly. Discovering otherwise left her unexpectedly tired.
“Tea?” the older woman asked.
This time she did not need to think before accepting.
At the station, Echo logged another accurate forecast. Eshan closed the comparison slate and went to his next duty. Kahlia stayed for one more cycle, then followed.
To be continued…
