Episode 1 — The wire that never slept

Dateline: 14 March 1978, basement utility room, 418 West 3rd Street, Davenport, Iowa

A short item in the Quad-City Times noted that a night-shift radio operator at a riverfront warehouse had kept a surplus receiver running past midnight after the scheduled marine forecast ended. The set, powered from a wall outlet behind the boiler, continued to print fragmented ship positions on a roll of thermal paper until the operator shut it down at 4:10 a.m. No distress calls were logged. The warehouse manager confirmed the receiver was later returned to storage.

The account that circulates in Davenport apartments today no longer mentions the river or the warehouse. Residents describe a rented room above a closed pharmacy on West 3rd where a pair of wired earbuds, left plugged into an old amplifier, refused to power down. The earbuds are said to deliver three-line notes already addressed to the person wearing them, each note listing the next items that person is about to forget. People who repeat the story claim the notes cease if the earbuds are shown to a second listener, and that matching pairs still appear in thrift bins along the same block. No pharmacy at that address has operated since the late 1970s.
