Episode 51: Fragments and Continuity
The younger woman found it easier to speak while her hands were occupied.
She and the older worker adjusted the nutrient flow through a row of greens. Between checks she described the newest fragment: an unfinished duty, someone expecting her, a promise that still seemed to belong to her.
“I don’t even know their face.”
“Then tell me what you do remember.”
She did. The older woman listened without supplying the missing pieces.
Near the central station, Echo called Eshan over.
Three zones in the Archive had begun showing small, synchronized fluctuations. They did not match an alarm or a known repair cycle.
Kahlia joined them, leaving her cane within reach of the chair.
“Damage?”
“None indicated,” Echo said. “A repeating pattern. New to these records.”
They saved the first sequence before changing the display.
The quieter historian came to return a sensor slate. He watched one repetition and asked whether they had recorded the background readings too. Echo added them to the comparison.
Elsewhere, the warmer teacher helped two conduits settle an argument over a shared tool. Neither had to abandon the task; they simply needed a turn.
Kahlia stayed until the pattern repeated again. Then she rose.
“Keep a record. Call me if it changes.”
There was curiosity in her voice, and room left over for the rest of the day.
To be continued…
