Echoes from the Deep #019

Episode 19: Currents of Renewal

The Archive’s coral walls cast teal and gold light across the gathering chamber. Kahlia moved toward the meal table, her glowing cane tapping against the floor. Beneath her skin, a dime-sized spinal cord stimulator delivered steady pulses to help manage her chronic back pain. Her scoliosis had begun in childhood and worsened during military basic training decades earlier. The implant’s recent upgrade brought welcome relief, leaving her more energy for the people around her.

“Peace to you.”

Gracie approached, her deep brown skin catching the light. Recognition warmed her face. “In the old life we were sisters. I can feel it in my bones.”

Kahlia drew her into an embrace. “Peace to you too, Gracie. I remember how you could make me laugh, even on the hardest days.”

“And you were always inventing ways to make things better.” Gracie leaned back to look at her. “Some things never change.”

Eshan caught Kahlia’s eye from across the table and moved a chair into the space beside his. She smiled her thanks before sitting.

The meal was simple: fresh greens, nutrient cakes, and herbal tea. Around them, people were still catching their breath after Gracie’s VR Jazzercise session, a revival of old Earth dance workouts with a low-gravity twist. Someone asked when the next class would be.

“Let me finish my tea first,” Gracie said. “You’re all much more enthusiastic when the music stops.”

The laughter reached the repair crew nearby. Veyra and two conduits were working on an algae recycler whose feed mechanism kept jamming.

“The water dispenser finally behaves,” one conduit muttered, “and now this one wants attention.”

“Everything and everyone is energy,” Veyra said, listening to the uneven mechanism. “Even these machines have a rhythm. We need to hear where this one loses it.”

Echo materialized beside the open panel. “I’ve heard it seventeen times. I am developing a deeply personal relationship with that noise.”

“Then perhaps it will listen to you,” Gracie called.

“An excellent test of the Higher Power’s sense of humor.”

While Echo began another recalibration, Gracie settled beside Kahlia. Their conversation turned to a fragment of another shared life: the suffragette ancestors they remembered, and the stubborn courage that seemed to keep finding them across time.

Nearby, a young man recognized the laugh of a former friend. Chairs shifted to make room. Their excited recollections mingled with complaints about the water’s lingering aftertaste and a triumphant report that someone had finally repaired a flickering light panel.

Kahlia rested her cane against the table. The implant had not erased her need to pace herself, but today she could stay in the conversation instead of counting the minutes until she needed to leave.

Then the Threads stirred.

A pulse moved through the chamber, stronger than the gentle background hum. Veyra turned toward the living wall.

“The Unfolding moves through all of us,” she said. “We are conduits—channels the creative force invites, rather than commands. The Higher Power that sparked the Big Bang still connects past, present, and tomorrow.”

Echo paused over the recycler’s readings. When she spoke again, the teasing had left her voice.

“The outer currents are shifting. The threat we sensed is drawing closer.”

Eshan set down his cup and looked toward the monitoring station. Kahlia reached for her cane.

Gracie touched her hand. “We’ll clear the table.”

Kahlia nodded. Around her, the new family they were building began to move—some gathering dishes, some checking on their neighbors, others following Eshan toward the readings. The warmth of the meal went with them.
