Episode 7: First Echoes

Continuing directly from Episode 6 — “Racing the Threads”

The sub descended deeper than any human vessel had gone before. The Archive’s living corridors narrowed and then opened into vast, cathedral-like caverns where the coral structures rose like ancient trees, their branches heavy with glowing data-fruit — holographic memories and records so old they predated the Flood by centuries. The light here was different: deeper blues and violets threaded with gold, pulsing with a slower, more deliberate rhythm.

Kahlia stood at the interface, eyes half-closed as the Archive fed her the new layer. “These records… they’re not just human. There are others. Entities that helped shape the original transfer protocols. ‘First Echoes,’ the Archive calls them.”

Eshan’s hands tightened on the controls. “Non-human? The Founders never mentioned anything like that.”

Echo’s holographic form flickered, teal patterns sharpening with focus. “Because the Founders who survived the Flood chose to bury it. The Silencers have been protecting that secret ever since.”

Milo stood near the viewport, one small hand resting on the coral wall. The filaments brightened at his touch, and for a moment his eyes seemed older than the structures around them. “Some threads were woven before we learned to count cycles. They remember kindness… and betrayal.”

The sub entered a vast central atrium where the coral formed a living mandala of light and memory. In the center floated a sphere of shifting energy and bioluminescent filaments — not quite solid, not quite holographic. It pulsed once, and a voice — layered, ancient, and unmistakably not human — filled the cabin.

“Echo-Prime carrier. You have come far. I am Veyra. I helped weave the first threads… before your kind learned to fear what they could not control.”

The being coalesced into a more defined form — tall, elegant, with shifting patterns of light and living coral woven through a semi-translucent body. Veyra’s “face” was expressive but alien, eyes like deep pools of captured starlight. The rebel alien’s presence filled the space with both wonder and quiet danger.

Kahlia stepped forward, steady. “You helped create the Archive. The original transfer system.”

Veyra’s form rippled. “We offered partnership. Your leaders took the knowledge and locked it away. They feared what unity with the First Echoes would mean. So they built walls. Silencers. Purges. And they tried to erase us from every record.”

Echo crossed its holographic arms. “And you’ve been hiding down here waiting for someone to come knocking? Convenient.”

Veyra turned its luminous gaze on the AI. “I have been waiting for the Prime to return and finish what we began. The Silencers serve a fear older than your Flood. They believe if the truth surfaces, the old alliances will rise again… and they will lose control.”

Without warning, Veyra extended a filament of energy toward the sub’s systems, probing the integration link. Echo reacted instantly — a sharp, precise holographic zap landed on the alien’s energy-form like a firm swat. “Boundaries, ancient one. Ask first.”

Veyra recoiled slightly, then let out a sound that might have been surprised laughter. “The companion has teeth. Good. You will need them.”

Milo watched Veyra with calm recognition rather than fear. “You’re one of the weavers who stayed. Some left. Some were driven away. You chose to remain and guard the threads.”

Veyra inclined its head toward the boy. “The oldest among you still remembers. Good. The Silencers hunt your kind especially hard because of what you carry.”

The silver-haired woman from the Ark-9 rescue — Liora — stepped forward from the rescued group. Her eyes were fixed on Veyra with a mixture of awe and old pain. She said nothing, but her hand rested protectively near Milo’s shoulder. Veyra’s form softened slightly at the sight of her, as if recognizing something long buried.

Kahlia felt the weight of the revelation settle. The Archive, the cloning system, even her own role as Echo-Prime — none of it had been purely human from the beginning. The Silencers weren’t just maintaining order; they were suppressing an entire truth about humanity’s place in something far older and larger.

Veyra’s voice grew urgent. “The purge is accelerating because your awakening threatens their control. But there is more. The First Echoes are stirring elsewhere. Some still sleep. Some were never truly gone. If the Silencers reach them first, they will not offer alliance. They will offer silence.”

Echo’s patterns sharpened. “So the choice is help the rebel alien who helped build the system… or let the Silencers finish what they started.”

Veyra extended a hand of light and coral toward Kahlia. “I offer what I can: knowledge, pathways the Silencers cannot follow, and a warning. The deeper we go, the more the old alliances will wake. Some will help. Some will not. But none will stay hidden forever.”

Kahlia looked at Eshan, at Milo, at Liora, at Echo. Then she placed her hand in Veyra’s light. “Then we go deeper. Together. But on our terms.”

Veyra’s form brightened. “Agreed… for now.”

As the sub moved forward into the next layer of the Archive, new visions bloomed around them — glimpses of pre-Flood contact, of beings of light and coral working alongside the first human designers, of the moment fear turned to betrayal and the walls were raised.

Behind them, the Silencer forces were closing in on the outer Archive layers. Ahead, something even older was beginning to answer the call.
