Chapter Four: Lemon on the Windowsill

From The Price of Extension

by Esi Noire

Mrs. M’s daughter came to stay. The house was full, projected granddaughters on the wall, great-grandbabies outside. The boy had mowed the lawn right.

Nomi placed a lemon on the windowsill.

“Decoration?”
“Air freshener. Helps with humidity.”

Mrs. M narrowed her eyes. “You get that from one of your little AIM friends?”

“I am not supposed to have AIM friends.”
“That means yes,” she said.

Later, Nomi found a photo of Mrs. M, Freddie, and three wild-haired children. She didn’t scan it.

She memorized the love.

That night, after the house was quiet, Nomi set the lemon beside the old recipe box.

“I remember all of it,” she whispered.
